The real question is rarely “which is better.” It is “which one belongs in this specific room.” Here is how that breaks down across a typical South Florida home.

What Solar Shades Actually Do
A solar shade is a technical mesh. It blocks a meaningful share of solar heat and UV while leaving the weave open enough to see through. Lowered, you still have your view and plenty of natural light — just without the glare and the greenhouse effect.
The tradeoff is privacy. Because they are woven rather than solid, solar shades work by contrast: during the day you can see out and people cannot easily see in, but after dark, when it is brighter inside than out, that reverses.
What Blackout Shades Actually Do
A blackout shade uses a solid, opaque fabric — often with a backing layer — to stop light. Fully lowered, a well-installed blackout shade makes a room genuinely dark at midday, and gives you complete privacy at any hour.
The tradeoff is the obvious one: no view, no natural light. It is a shade you deploy when you want it, not one you leave down all day.

Room by Room: Which One Wins
Living Room — Solar
This is solar shade territory almost without exception. Living rooms usually hold your best view and your largest glass, and blacking that out during the day defeats the purpose of the room. Solar shades cut the heat and glare while keeping everything you actually want. If you entertain at night and want privacy, layer drapery over the top rather than switching to blackout.
Bedroom — Blackout
Sleep quality wins here. Early sunrises, streetlights, and headlights all conspire against you, and a solar shade will not stop any of them. If you want the best of both, a dual-roller system gives you a solar shade for daytime and a blackout shade on the same window for night.
Home Office — Solar
Glare on your monitor is the problem you are solving, not darkness. A solar shade with a tighter weave kills screen glare and softens the light without forcing you to work with the lights on. Pay attention to which window is behind your desk versus behind your screen — they need different treatment.
Media Room — Blackout
Any room built around a screen wants blackout, and it wants it done properly. Edge light is what ruins a media room, so side channels or a generous overlap matter as much as the fabric itself.
Nursery — Blackout
Daytime naps are the entire argument. Choose a cordless or motorized lift — this is a safety issue, not a convenience one, and cordless is the standard for any room a small child uses.
Kitchen — Usually Solar
Kitchens want light and easy cleaning. A solar shade in a moisture- and grease-resistant material handles the sink window or the breakfast nook well. Blackout in a kitchen is rarely useful.
When the Answer Is Both
Dual-roller systems mount two shades on one window — typically a solar shade in front and a blackout behind, each operating independently. In a primary bedroom with a great view, or a living room that doubles as a movie room, this is usually the right answer rather than a compromise between the two.
It costs more than a single shade, and it is worth budgeting for on the two or three windows where you genuinely need both behaviors instead of specifying it house-wide.

Understanding Openness Factor
If you go with solar shades, openness factor is the spec that matters most. It describes how tightly the fabric is woven — lower numbers mean a tighter weave.
- 1–3% — maximum glare and heat control, more privacy, softer view. Good for home offices and west-facing glass.
- 5% — the common middle ground. Balances view retention against glare control.
- 10% and up — clearest view, least protection. Best on shaded exposures or where the view is the priority.
On a strong western exposure, most people are happier with a tighter weave than they expect. It is worth seeing samples on the actual window before deciding, because openness reads very differently depending on how much light is behind it.
