02 · The problem

Creating a noticeable change through one surface.

Refreshing a room begins with deciding which elements will have the greatest visual effect. Walls provide a continuous backdrop to furnishings, trim and lighting, making their finish an important design choice.

The challenge is to introduce character while considering how the pattern and surrounding details work together.

Wallpaper that changes the character of the space.

New wallpaper was the change Emma identified in her Coconut Grove room. A patterned wall finish brings detail to the backdrop and can alter the relationship between the walls and everything placed in front of them.

Rather than treating the wall as an empty surface, wallpaper makes it an active part of the design. Emma’s account highlights the effect that change had on the room’s overall atmosphere.
